Lee Health Kids' Urgent Care Expansion

It’s the most aggressive and deadliest form of driving there is. “In 2020, 928 people were actually killed in crashes that involved red light runner.” Lee Health Injury Prevention and Resource Coordinator Syndi Bultman said a third of Americans know someone who was injured or killed in a red light running crash. “Motor vehicle crashes are going up every single year here in our county,” said Bultman.

In 2021, 167 people in Lee County alone were ticketed or involved in a crash due to running a red light. “The other day I was driving here to work, I’m at a major intersection and the light is definitely red, and six cars ran that red light,” said Bultman.

Those who aren’t expecting it usually suffer the most. “Most of the people who are going to be getting hit in a red light running crash are your pedestrians, your bicyclists, or it’s going to be people in another vehicle, not the one that ran the red light to begin with,” said Bultman.

When you approach a red light, always come to a complete stop and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. It’s also important to practice defensive driving. “Even though your light turned green, don’t go right away. You want to make sure that everybody else stopped. There are instances, maybe there’s a large semi that is coming, and they’re traveling too fast and that light turned, maybe it’s a light that turns quick, they may not be able to come to a complete stop,” said Bultman. It’s important to remember your vehicle is a weapon, and the decisions you make on the roadways can have a major impact on countless lives.
